Filipino Martial Arts (FMA)
Siling
Labuyo Arnis is a modern hybrid system of Filipino Martial Arts (FMA). It focuses
on the use of the single stick, single knife and empty-handed methods of fighting.
FMA in general are characterized by the study of weaponry, as well as a less rigid,
more adaptable style of training. Typically, curricula include the use of single
sticks, double sticks, single dagger, double dagger, stick (or sword) and dagger
used together, as well as various long or flexible weapons.
Unlike most martial arts, the FMA introduce weapons training to students right
from the start, rather than waiting for several years. Empty-handed techniques
are integrated with the study of weapons, with each area of the curriculum reinforcing
skills learned in the rest.
Badger Jones, 38, earned his black belt in Arnis in 1994 from Peter Kautz of Ithaca
NY. He also has an extensive background in Chinese Martial Arts, and teaches Northern
Shaolin Five Animals Kung Fu, in addition to Filipino Martial Arts. This year,
with the permission of his guro (teacher), he founded Siling Labuyo Arnis. This
is a non-dogmatic system, concentrating on the three core methods of FMA, namely
the stick, knife and hands.
